SUMMARY: Aids children and youth in developing their full potential in health and education.  Works as a part of the total school health service program planned by the school, in cooperation with the local health department.  Assists school nurse in caring for the health needs of children and staff at a Palominas School District.  Under the direct/indirect supervision of a school nurse, performs the essential functions of a health assistant.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs routine first aid procedures; assists in screening ill or injured students.
• Upon evaluation, refers seriously ill or injured students to the emergency medical system (911).
• Serves as a liaison between children, Palominas staff, school nurse, parents, and community and external health and social agencies.
• Maintains student health records.  Ensures health histories are recorded.  Performs height and weight checks for each child and posts results to health records.  May maintain diabetic student’s records and conduct diabetic sugar tests.
• Tests hearing and vision of students and posts results to health records.
• Gathers immunization history from parents, physicians and health care facilities and records on health record.  Interprets immunization records. Inputs immunization data into records system.
• Maintains a daily log of all students tended to, recording reason for visit and action taken; inputs data into computer.
• Arranges for and assists nurse with special health programs such as: lice screening, fluoride administrations and immunization clinics.   
• Reports communicable diseases to appropriate health agency for further instruction.
• May assist in medications distribution and monitoring of diabetic diet as needed.
• May schedule appointments, collect permission slips and fee payments for various available services.
• May present and provide health related programs and services to various staff.
• May assist with clerical duties such as answering phones, mail duties, etc.
• Maintains health office supplies and orders supplies when needed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Knowledge of all basic first aid methods, including CPR, AED and training methods.
• Awareness of the universal precautions for handling body fluids and blood borne pathogens.  Must demonstrate proficiency with thermometer and sphygmomanometer.
• Knowledge of substance abuse detection methods.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations.
• Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members.
• Perform all duties in accordance with Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies.
• Ability to handle illness and injury to others in a professional manner.
• Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response.
• Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: 

Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED and six months to one year related experience.  Any equivalent combination of training, education or experience that meets the minimum qualifications; experience preferred in medical field

 

Language Skills:  Proficiency in English; Spanish beneficial

Certification, Licenses, Registrations:  Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification; Fingerprint Clearance; Measles/Mumps/Rubella Immunity/Vaccination; must have and maintain current CPR and First Aid Certifications

 

Computer Proficiency:  Strong proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Explorer, Word, Excel and Outlook

While performing the duties of this job physical exertion is not always required to perform all aspects of the job.  Assistance is available to perform physically demanding tasks if needed.  Work involves sitting for extended periods of time, moving from one location to another, reaching, stooping, bending, holding and grasping.  Visual weakness must not prohibit performance of job duties.  Verbal communicative ability may be required of public contact.  The employee may be required to lift up to 100 pounds and push individuals in wheelchairs. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor environment and outdoors in all types of weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times.   Will have contact with students, staff and the public.
